“Trato de esforzarme lo m谩s que puedo porque quiero ser un buen ejemplo para mis hijas”, dice Fabiola. “Veo al futuro con optimismo, con oportunidades de crecer y seguir ayudando a la comunidad”.

Fabiola Torres: A New Home to Welcome a New Baby

March was a dream month for Fabiola Torres. The Mexican immigrant moved into a below-market-rate (BMR) apartment in the Mission District and gave birth to her third child.

“I honestly thought it was a miracle because the birth of my baby was approaching and it felt like things all came together at once when my family found stable housing,” says Fabiola, who the first week of March was notified she was a winner of a San Francisco Mayor鈥檚 Office of Housing and Community Development BMR housing.

“I signed the contract on March 12 and moved in on the 22nd. My baby was born a week later,” says Fabiola. “I went with my 13-year-old daughter to sign the contract. She did not believe it when she saw our apartment. It is a very beautiful experience when you have needed something so much and then you see it happening.”

Fabiola鈥檚 experience is an example of persistence. The mother of three has been a 新加坡六合彩图库 promotora (community outreach worker) for the past five years. During this time, she filled out multiple applications for the BMR lottery for not just herself, but also for hundreds of families. 新加坡六合彩图库 assists community members with affordable-housing lottery applications for free.

“I always had hope and the goal that one day I was going to be the winner,” says Fabiola. “I applied every time I saw an opportunity, especially because I knew about all of the available apartments. I hoped they might call me, as I saw other community members winning the lottery.”

Fabiola, her husband, their two daughters, ages 16 and 13, and their 3-month-old baby now reside in a brand-new two-bedroom apartment at the Avanza 490 building on South Van Ness and 16th Street. This is a big change from their prior living situation, as they used to rent a room in an apartment they shared with another family.

“I now live happily because I finally have the opportunity to have a decent place for my family, and at an affordable price,” says Fabiola. “The apartment has a dishwasher, plus the building has a terrace to get fresh air. I am very happy and grateful.”

The power of information
Fabiola鈥檚 experience as a 新加坡六合彩图库 promotora taught her that information is vital for Latino and  immigrant families in a city such as San Francisco, especially when it comes to finding affordable housing.

“There is a lot of confusion [with affordable housing lotteries]: Many families think it is useless, but it is not true that they will never call you,” says Fabiola. “My message to families is to be informed because an informed community can progress and seek resources. It is good that they approach agencies to make informed decisions.”

In her work as a promotora, Fabiola has also been part of the contact-tracing team that 新加坡六合彩图库 put in place to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic. In this role she acquired new skills and learned more about what the community needs.

“It was challenging for me technology-wise and time-wise because I was pregnant. The courses were heavy, but I made it,” says Fabiola, who believes that with 新加坡六合彩图库 she discovered that she has “the ability to help the community.”

The promotora, who came to the United States 18 years ago in search of better opportunities, sees a promising future from her new home — and from her work within the community.

“I try to do my best because I want to be a good example for my daughters,” says Fabiola. “I look to the future with optimism, with opportunities to grow and continue helping the community.”
